The U74HC138 is a high-speed, 3-to-8 line decoder and demultiplexer designed to decode a 3-bit binary address into one of eight active-LOW outputs. It incorporates three separate Chip Select inputs—two active-LOW and one active-HIGH—which allow for straightforward cascading, demultiplexing, and chip-selection without requiring external logic gates.

By supplying data into one of the Chip Select lines while maintaining the remaining selects in their active states, the device functions seamlessly as a 1-of-8 demultiplexer.
